Chosen from more than 750 entrants in the Furphy Literary Award 2025, this anthology is a celebration of the most promising writers in Australia this year.
The tales are about us and all we embody. They cover the diversity of life in Australia with themes of memory, life and loss, childhood antics, family relationships, lost opportunities, among others. They reminisce on what made us and where we are now, and project us into futures as yet unknown.
These stories show Australians in all their guises, at their worst, wisest and funniest. But more than that, they entertain and enlighten. Be prepared to laugh, cry and enjoy.

About the Author
Joseph Furphy wrote the Australian literary classic, Such is Life, in 1903, under the pen name of βTom Collinsβ, slang for βa tall storyβ. With its unreliable narrator travelling the countryside and telling the stories of the people he meets, the alias was certainly appropriate. His brother John, a blacksmith, created agricultural implements, most notably the water carts used by forces during the First World War. Around these carts, stories were told, legs were pulled, rumours gathered momentum, and the term βfurphyβ became part of the Australian lexicon. The Furphy Literary Award, established in 1992, became a national competition for the first time in 2020. In 2022 it attracted over 600 entrants who took up the challenge to tackle its topic: βAustralian Life in all its diversityβ. The Furphy Anthology 2022 features the sixteen short stories judged to be the best of the best in this yearβs competition.
