The Near West by Tania Mace offers an exquisite and richly detailed chronicle of the Auckland neighbourhood of Grey Lynn, an area steeped in history and cultural significance. With its imaginative narrative and engaging prose, this book weaves together the dynamic past and present of a locale that has captivated New Zealanders and visitors alike. Through a seamless blend of historical accounts, personal anecdotes, and striking visuals, Mace paints a vivid picture of a neighbourhood that, despite undergoing significant gentrification, retains its unique identity and charm.

Often referred to as 'The People's Republic of Grey Lynn', this storied neighbourhood is renowned for its diverse and eclectic character. From its early days as an eeling ground for the mana whenua to its colonial transformation into farmland, Grey Lynn’s evolution is charted meticulously. The area saw gradual residential development through Victorian and Edwardian times, giving rise to a panorama of architectural styles that blend the old with the new. This book meticulously traces Grey Lynn’s historical trajectory, highlighting key moments and pivotal changes that have shaped its identity.

Grey Lynn is not merely a backdrop but a character in its own right with a storied past touched by early industries, the rough and tumble of left-wing politics, and successive waves of migration. Post-war migrants from rural Māori communities and the Pacific have added layers of culture and resilience, enriching the community’s fabric. This neighbourhood has also been the cradle of New Zealand’s bohemian scene, nurturing generations of artists, filmmakers, writers, journalists, and musicians. It has always been a sanctuary for the queer community, fostering an environment of acceptance and solidarity.

The book also extends its gaze to include neighbouring areas such as Arch Hill and Westmere, offering a comprehensive exploration that extends beyond Grey Lynn’s borders. Each chapter of The Near West is illuminated by stunning illustrations and photographs that bring the history to life, making it an insightful and aesthetically pleasing read.

Tania Mace’s narrative is both comprehensive and engaging, ensuring that the rich history of Grey Lynn and its surroundings is accessible to all readers. With its in-depth research and evocative storytelling, The Near West stands as a tribute to one of New Zealand’s most fascinating neighbourhoods, preserving its legacy for future generations.
