Book Hero thinking about your next read

Lyre Lyre asks what happens when poems make contact with non-human worlds; in so doing, it welcomes whole new worlds to poetry.

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

Lyre is a sonic, sculptural cornucopia of new and startling forms. Stuart Cooke proposes that all kinds of life - animal, plant and otherwise - have their own modes of expression, each of which can be translated into a different kind of poetry. Ranging across Australasian oceans, coastlines, rainforests, savannahs and deserts, and similarly wide-ranging in its approach to form and lineation, Lyre asks what happens when poems make contact with non-human worlds; in so doing, it welcomes whole new worlds to poetry.

Inspired in part by books like Les Murray's Translations from the Natural World and Barry Hill & John Wolseley's Lines for Birds, Lyre is the result of many years of research into a selection of Australasian flora, fauna and landforms. The collection asks what happens to poetry when it encounters more-than-human life.

'Drawing on the deepest resources of antipodean poetics, Lyre hymns the created world in all its prodigious diversity. It is funny, reverent, full of curious facts, and crazily ambitious. A triumph.' - JM Coetzee

  • The Grass is Greener Over Your Grave
If Cooke's previous book, Lyre, urged us towards the "more" of the more-than-human world, then The Grass is Greener Over Your Grave returns to the "human" end of that spectrum—though always with an eye to the porosity of the human and its immersion in waves of land, language, dream, and sea. Typically wide-ranging in form, this new collection develops Cooke's...

    Apples & Oranges
The essays of Apples & Oranges are selected from a decade of sustained enquiry into the possibilities for human and more-than-human poetics in the Anthropocene. Drawing on Cooke's experiences as a poet, critic, traveller, and translator, the landscapes are predominantly Antarctic, Australasian, and North & South American. New continental, intellectual, and affective formations emerge here as hybrids of memoir, travelogue,...

  • The Iliad
When Emily Wilson's translation of The Odyssey appeared in 2017—revealing the ancient poem in a contemporary idiom that was "fresh, unpretentious and lean" (Madeline Miller, Washington Post)—critics lauded it as "a revelation" (Susan Chira, New York Times) and "a cultural landmark" (Charlotte Higgins, Guardian) that would forever change how Homer is read in English. Now Wilson has returned with an...
