Tribe
From the author of THE PERFECT STORM and WAR comes a book about why men miss war, why Londoners missed the Blitz, and what we can all learn from American Indian captives who refused to go home.
Drawing on a wide range of historical, psychological, and anthropological research, Junger explores the strong bonds formed in tribal societies and wartime environments, where individuals thrive on a deep sense of mutual dependency and shared purpose. He argues that the problems many veterans face upon returning home are not entirely due to the trauma of war, but rather the alienation they experience when reintegrating into a modern society that lacks these intimate, cohesive group dynamics.
One of the book’s most powerful discussions is around why many veterans who never saw combat still suffer from PTSD. Junger suggests that our species' natural inclination to live in small, interdependent groups provides insight into this phenomenon. The communal lifestyle of soldiers resembles the primitive human communities where members relied on one another for survival, comfort, and identity. In stark contrast, today's affluent societies promote individualism and self-reliance, which often lead to social isolation and psychological distress.
Moreover, Junger highlights the paradox of modernity: as wealth and comfort increase, so do rates of depression, suicide, and PTSD. The lack of communal support structures and meaningful social connections in prosperous societies can leave individuals feeling profoundly disconnected and vulnerable to mental health issues. Through analysing the veteran experience, Junger posits that embracing some aspects of tribal living may help mitigate these problems and offer a pathway to a more connected, fulfilling life.
Tribe is a compelling call to re-evaluate the way we think about community, belonging, and the social structures that support us. Junger's insightful analysis not only addresses the plight of veterans but also poses broader questions about how all of us can find meaning and connection in an increasingly fragmented world. This book challenges readers to look beyond the individual and consider the powerful impacts of collective human experiences.
Whether you are a student of anthropology, a military veteran, or simply someone interested in the fabric of human society, Tribe offers profound insights and inspires vital conversations about how we can create healthier, more supportive communities.
