Spaceman by Mike Massimino is a compelling memoir that takes readers on an extraordinary journey from the dreamscape of childhood fantasies to the curtains of outer space. It chronicles Massimino's evolution from a six-year-old entranced by Neil Armstrong's iconic moonwalk to a tenacious individual determined to break through NASA's barriers and actualize his aspirations.

Massimino's path was fraught with challenges. Despite his unwavering ambition, NASA initially rejected his application, citing his subpar eyesight. Undeterred, Massimino embarked on an intense regimen to train his eyes, an effort that culminated in his acceptance by NASA on his third attempt. This marks the beginning of his illustrious 18-year career as an astronaut, an odyssey documented with candid honesty and vivid detail.

In Spaceman, Massimino offers an insider’s perspective on the demanding training, the sense of camaraderie among astronauts, and the sheer determination required to enter the realm of space exploration. Readers will find themselves captivated by his descriptions of strapping into the Space Shuttle, the awe-inspiring sensation of breaking through Earth's atmosphere, and the surreal experience of spacewalking. His recounting of servicing the Hubble Telescope provides a gripping narrative of both technical precision and human courage.

The memoir also delves into the profound impact of the Columbia disaster, shedding light on the emotional and professional challenges faced by astronauts in its aftermath. Massimino's determination to honour the memories of fallen colleagues while continuing his missions speaks volumes about his resilience and dedication.

Inspired by the film The Right Stuff, Massimino's story is as much a tribute to his fellow astronauts as it is a testament to his own qualities. His narrative showcases not only the rigorous demands of space travel but also the profound human elements that underpin this high-stakes endeavour.

‘This terrific memoir... is utterly gripping’ - Mail on Sunday
