Proceed, Sergeant Lamb
Proceed, Sergeant Lamb is Robert Graves' continuation of the fictionalized account of the adventures of Sergeant Roger Lamb, an Irish soldier who fought for the British during the American Revolutionary War.
This edition features a new introduction by Madison Smartt Bell.
Sergeant Roger Lamb finds himself in a prison camp near Boston with 3,000 other soldiers from General Johnny Burgoyne's army, who had surrendered at the Battle of Saratoga. As a non-commissioned officer in the British Army who served in America during the American War of Independence, Lamb is determined to escape after the American Congress refuses to ratify a repatriation agreement.
He successfully navigates through General Washington's lines and manages to rejoin Cornwallis in the Carolinas, where he fights until the siege of Yorktown. Following this, he makes another remarkable escape, managing to rejoin the British forces in New York.
This book is the second in a two-book series inspired by the real-life memoirs of Sergeant Lamb. Renowned poet, classicist, and novelist Robert Graves traces the sergeant's harrowing time in military service. The story provides a compelling, only barely fictionalized eyewitness account of a crucial point in American history.
