Red Notice by Bill Browder is a harrowing account of one man's fight against the corruption and brutality embedded within the highest echelons of Russian power. Blending personal memoir, geopolitical intrigue, and a true-crime narrative, this book takes the reader on an electrifying journey from the flourishing financial markets of New York and London in the 1990s to the lethal corridors of power in Putin's Moscow.

Browder, a leading hedge-fund manager, initially finds tremendous success investing in the burgeoning Russian economy after the collapse of the Soviet Union. However, his fortunes take a dramatic turn when he begins to unravel an intricate web of fraud perpetrated by the oligarchs and government officials. Determined to expose the truth, Browder becomes ensnared in a treacherous game of cat-and-mouse with some of the world's most dangerous players.

The heart of the narrative centres around the tragic fate of Sergei Magnitsky, a bright and principled young lawyer hired by Browder to investigate a $230 million tax fraud carried out by Russian authorities. Magnitsky pays the ultimate price for his courage, beaten to death by police officers after his relentless pursuit of justice. His story becomes Browder's rallying cry as he embarks on a relentless campaign to hold those responsible accountable, leading to the landmark passage of the Magnitsky Act, which imposes stiff sanctions on human rights offenders in Russia and beyond.

Renowned for its vivid storytelling and sharp analysis, Red Notice provides an unflinching look into the dark machinations of Putin's Russia. The book is not only an exposé of financial malfeasance but also a poignant eulogy to a friend lost under horrific circumstances. Browder's determination, courage, and unyielding call for justice serve as a powerful testimony to the enduring fight against tyranny and oppression.

As Lee Child aptly notes, "Reads like a classic thriller, with an everyman hero alone and in danger in a hostile foreign city ... but it's all true, and it's a story that needs to be told." This riveting account has earned widespread acclaim, compelling readers and critics alike to confront the disconcerting realities it reveals. The Times describes it as "an unburdening, a witness statement and a thriller all at the same time ... electrifying," while The Washington Post acknowledges its narrative power: "A riveting account... it is a powerful story and Browder tells it skilfully."

Browder's life is indelibly marked by his brave crusade against corruption in Russia, making Red Notice an essential read for anyone interested in contemporary geopolitics, human rights activism, and the intricate world of high finance. It is an eye-opening, gut-wrenching tale that underscores the perilous journey from affluence to advocacy, demonstrating that the pursuit of justice is fraught with danger but deeply necessary.

About the Author

Sir Bill Browder, founder and CEO of Hermitage Capital Management, was the largest foreign investor in Russia until 2005, when he was denied entry to the country after exposing widespread corruption. Since 2009, when his lawyer Sergei Magnitsky was murdered in Russian police custody, he has been leading a campaign to impose visa bans and asset freezes on human rights abusers and highly corrupt officials. The United States was the first to impose these sanctions with the passage of the Sergei Magnitsky Rule of Law Accountability Act in 2012. This was followed by the US Global Magnitsky Act in 2016. Since then, Canada, the United Kingdom, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have all passed their own versions of the Magnitsky Act. Browder is currently working to have similar legislation passed across the European Union and other countries around the world. He received a knighthood in the King's Birthday Honour's List in June 2024.
