The Dwarf Who Moved and Other Remarkable Tales From a Life in the Law
The Dwarf Who Moved and Other Remarkable Tales From a Life in the Law offers a profound glimpse into the life and career of New Zealand's pre-eminent criminal barrister, Sir Peter Williams QC. Known for his fearless advocacy in the courtroom, Williams reflects on the transformative periods within New Zealand's judicial and penal systems.
Throughout his distinguished career, Sir Peter witnessed pivotal legal battles ranging from cases involving abortion, homosexuality, and fortune-telling, to high-profile instances of wrongful imprisonment and police corruption. This rich collection of memoirs, anecdotes, and forensic analysis brings to life the individuals and cases that marked his career, featuring names like Ronald Jorgensen, Arthur Allan Thomas, "Mr Asia", James K Baxter, and Winston Peters, among many others.
In The Dwarf Who Moved and Other Remarkable Tales From a Life in the Law, Sir Peter is revealed as a remarkable figure: fearless, astute, and compassionate. His stories will convince readers that truth is indeed often stranger than fiction.
Recognised as New Zealand's best-known criminal barrister, Peter Williams QC participated in some of the country's most celebrated and controversial trials. His legal legacy includes involvement in the infamous โMr Asiaโ case, the Basset Road machinegun murders, the Arthur Allan Thomas appeal, and the trial of World War II hero Peta Awatere. Elevated to Queen's Counsel in 1987, he was honoured as a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit shortly before his death in June 2015.
