Night Duel Over Germany

Night Duel Over Germany explores the intense and prolonged night offensive by Bomber Command against Nazi Germany, which lasted nearly six years. This effort was one of Britain's major contributions to the Allied campaign during the Second World War. Initially, the operations faced heavy losses during daylight missions, revealing the inadequacy of the pre-war medium bombers in modern air warfare, which prompted the shift to night operations.

The Luftwaffe also encountered early difficulties, being initially without a dedicated night fighter and thus unprepared to defend the Reich effectively. These early challenges set the stage for a crucial strategic battle that necessitated adaptations on both sides. Soon, new and more capable aircraft emerged, accompanied by advancing tactics and technology, as each side sought dominance.

This evolution led to fascinating encounters between the crews of Bomber Command and the Luftwaffe's night fighter force, the Nachtjagd, characterised by remarkable courage and substantial losses on both sides. Among the dramatic events were Bomber Command's Thousand Bomber raids, the assault on the German V-weapons research hub at Peenemünde, and campaigns targeting the industrial Ruhr, Hamburg, and Berlin, including the catastrophic raid on Nuremberg.
