This fully illustrated title offers a balanced and detailed account of the clashes between two classic World War II fighters.
P-40E Warhawk vs A6M2 Zero-sen presents the intense aerial battles of World War II, where the P-40E Warhawk, often regarded as one of the less successful American fighter designs, found itself in a critical position. In 1942, it was the only aircraft available to the USAAC in-theatre, compelling units equipped with it to confront the formidable A6M2 Zero-sen.
Already gaining a near-mythical reputation for its exploits over China and Pearl Harbor, the A6M2 Zero-sen became a dreaded adversary. Over an eight-month period in 1942, a protracted air campaign unfolded between these two fighters, vying for air superiority over the skies of Java and northern Australia. During this time, the P-40Es and the Zero-sens engaged frequently, largely unopposed by other fighter types.
The Japanese, in terms of losses, seemed to have the upper hand, with more P-40Es shot down than Zero-sens. However, the presence of the American Warhawks forced the IJNAF to conduct high-altitude attacks, reducing their bombing accuracy and mitigating potential damage.
Fully illustrated throughout and supported by rare and previously unpublished photographs, P-40E Warhawk vs A6M2 Zero-sen draws from both American and Japanese sources. It tells the complete story of the iconic clashes between these two fighters in Darwin and the East Indies.
