Jochen Hein: Reflexion

Book Hero Magic crafted this summary to help describe this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Summary
Jochen Hein: Reflexion invites readers into the intriguing world of painter Jochen Hein. His artworks initially suggest realistic landscapes—seas, meadows, skies—but closer inspection reveals a complex interplay of colour and technique. Instead of straightforward depictions, Hein's paintings dissolve into abstract colour fields, showcasing layers of paint applied and manipulated through dripping, spraying, wiping, and daubing. The book offers insight into his process, revealing the fusion of the figurative and the abstract and exploring the very nature of painting as an art form.

A school of painterly vision—the artist Jochen Hein offers nothing less. From a distance, Hein's paintings seem to depict the surface of the sea, green meadows, or vast skies. But upon closer inspection, the reality of the paintings and our perception split. Nothing is the way it seems.

Instead of being realistic landscape paintings, the pictures vaporise into pure colour the closer one gets to them. And not only that: what the eye has recognised as reality up to then turns out to be a laboratory of processes, in which the colours merge, wet on wet, and the paint is dripped, sprayed, wiped with a painting cloth, removed, and thickly daubed. A look at his complicated painting technique is revealed, just as it would be during a visit to the artist's studio.

Hein's works are distinguished by the fact that they not only show painted nature, but the nature of painting as well. Fascinated, the viewer realises that the figurative and the abstract are the same here—even the illusion is an illusion.

Jochen Hein: Reflexion by Heiko Klaas, Holger Liebs, and Nicole Büsing invites you to explore this captivating interplay of reality and its façade through the lens of Hein's profound artistry.
