The Savage Storm by bestselling historian James Holland brings to life one of the most pivotal, brutal, and shattering campaigns the Allies faced in World War II. This compelling narrative starts with the invasion of Southern Italy in September 1943, following the Allies' victory in Sicily. As they expected to drive the Axis forces north and reach Rome by Christmas, they soon encountered fierce German resistance. Despite Italy's surrender, what was anticipated to be a swift victory devolved into one of the war's most gruelling battles.

Even with shipping and matériel being safeguarded for the upcoming D-Day landings, enormous expectations were placed on the progress of the invading armies. Unfortunately, these shortages slowed the Allied advance, leading to tragic consequences. The critical months leading up to the battle of Monte Cassino saw Allied troops endure a steep toll for every hard-fought mile. Faced with deteriorating weather, their progress over plains, mountains, shattered villages, and cities came at a heavy price as summer heat gave way to the freezing cold and relentless rain of winter.

In The Savage Storm, James Holland provides an unflinching and insightful chronicle of these dark and dramatic months. Known for recounting the Second World War from a ground-level perspective, Holland offers a vivid and fresh retelling that brings history to life like never before. By weaving together a wealth of letters, diaries, and other remarkable documents, he traces the battles as they unfolded. Readers will find themselves immersed in the heart of the action, experiencing the intense heat, the frigid cold, and the relentless rain alongside the soldiers who fought through these testing conditions.

Critically acclaimed for his expertise in military history, Holland's narrative is both educative and captivating. The Daily Mail notes, "Holland knows his stuff when it comes to military matters," while Sebastian Faulks hails him as "the best of the new generation of WW2 historians." With exhaustive research and eloquent writing, The Savage Storm stands out as a unique and essential account of this pivotal phase of the Second World War.

Perfect for history enthusiasts and readers looking for a gripping and detailed account of World War II, The Savage Storm showcases James Holland’s exceptional ability to bring historical events to life through meticulous research and engaging storytelling.
