Acclaimed literary historian Schmidt provides a unique meditation on the rediscovery of Gilgamesh and its profound influence on poets today. He describes how the poem is a work in progress even now, an undertaking that has drawn on the talents and obsessions of an unlikely cast of characters, from archaeologists and museum curators to tomb raiders and jihadis.

Publishers Weekly praises it as "an insightful, stimulating book sure to breathe new life into the would-be immortal king." Joan Acocella of New Yorker finds Schmidt's argument for the poem as modern poetry "touching and persuasive," reading it "spellbound, in one sitting." Jeva Lange in The Week calls it essential for those interested in language, history, or storytelling. Thomas L. Cooksey of Library Journal considers it "a solid addition to all collections," while John Butler in the Asian Review of Books describes it as an engaging and lively literary study that reanimates Gilgamesh with fresh insight.
