It’s the Government, Stupid

How Governments Blame Citizens for Their Own Policies
Book Hero Magic crafted this summary to help describe this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Summary
It’s the Government, Stupid by Keith Dowding challenges the common narrative that social problems are primarily the fault of individuals. The book argues that governments often evade their own responsibility by blaming citizens and focusing excessively on personal behaviour. Dowding highlights how issues like obesity, gun crime, homelessness, drug addiction, and problem gambling are largely consequences of political decisions. He calls for a fundamental change in perspective, urging readers to hold governments accountable for driving meaningful solutions.

Book Hero thinking about your next read

Governments conveniently blame social problems on their citizens, placing too much emphasis on personal responsibility. This book shows that 'nudging' citizens to better behaviour simply isn't good enough and explains why we should hold our politicians responsible for social problems.

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

Governments have developed a convenient habit of blaming social problems on their citizens, placing too much emphasis on personal responsibility and pursuing policies to 'nudge' their citizens to better behaviour.

Dowding shows that, in fact, responsibility for many of our biggest social crises— including obesity, gun crime, homelessness, drug addiction and problem gambling—should be laid at the feet of politicians.

He argues for a radical shift, encouraging us to stop scapegoating fellow citizens. He calls instead for us to demand more from our governments, who have the real power and responsibility to alleviate problems and bring about lasting change.

It’s the Government, Stupid explores these themes and challenges us to rethink who should be held accountable for societal issues.
