Our Kind of Traitor
Britain is in the depths of recession. A left-leaning young Oxford academic and his barrister girlfriend take an off-peak holiday on the Caribbean island of Antigua. By seeming chance they bump into a Russian millionaire called Dima who owns a peninsula and a diamond-encrusted gold watch.
Two young lovers find themselves in the darkening basement of an anonymous house in Bloomsbury. In the same room sit two members of Britain's intelligence service. And they want information.

DescriptionOur Kind of Traitor by John le Carré is a riveting espionage thriller that captures the nuances of contemporary global politics. Set against a backdrop of lush Caribbean landscapes, the story follows an English couple, Perry and Gail, who are enjoying a relaxing off-peak holiday on the sun-drenched island of Antigua. Their serene getaway takes an unexpected turn when they encounter Dima, a flamboyant Russian millionaire with a penchant for lavish displays of wealth including a diamond-encrusted gold watch and an imposing tattoo on his right thumb.
Dima’s request for a casual game of tennis soon spirals into something far more sinister. Drawn into his orbit, Perry and Gail find themselves plunged into a perilous world of intrigue and subterfuge. Dima, it turns out, is far more than just a wealthy eccentric. As they become unwittingly involved in his plans, the young couple are thrust into a tortuous journey that takes them from the picturesque streets of Paris to a secluded safe house in the Swiss Alps. Along the way, they navigate the murky corridors of London's financial district, exposing a dark web of corruption and the unholy alliance between the City's financial elite and Britain's intelligence services.
Le Carré masterfully intertwines complex characters with a plot that is as unpredictable as it is thrilling. The novel explores themes of loyalty, betrayal, and the moral complexities faced by ordinary individuals when they are sucked into the clandestine world of international espionage. Perry and Gail must decide whom to trust as they navigate a labyrinthine world where deception lurks at every turn.
Praise for the novel highlights le Carré's unparalleled ability to capture the zeitgeist of the modern era. The Times hails it as, “Return of the master… Having plumbed the devious depths of the Cold War, le Carré has done it again for our nasty new age.”
Our Kind of Traitor is a must-read for fans of le Carré and anyone who enjoys a sophisticated, gripping tale of espionage and suspense. His portrayal of the intersection between high finance and covert operations is both timely and hauntingly prescient, ensuring the novel's place as a modern classic in the spy genre.

About the Author
John le Carre was born in 1931. For six decades, he wrote novels that came to define our age. The son of a confidence trickster, he spent his childhood between boarding school and the London underworld. At sixteen he found refuge at the University of Bern, then later at Oxford. A spell of teaching at Eton led him to a short career in British Intelligence (MI5 & 6). He published his debut novel, Call for the Dead, in 1961 while still a secret servant. His third novel, The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, secured him a worldwide reputation, which was consolidated by the acclaim for his trilogy, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, The Honourable Schoolboy and Smiley's People. At the end of the Cold War, le Carre widened his scope to explore an international landscape including the arms trade and the War on Terror. His memoir, The Pigeon Tunnel, was published in 2016 and the last George Smiley novel, A Legacy of Spies, appeared in 2017. He died on 12 December 2020. His posthumous novel, Silverview, was published in 2021.
