The Nag Hammadi Scriptures
An English-language book of the library of fourth-century Gnostic manuscripts discovered in Egypt in 1945 which rivaled the Dead Sea Scrolls find in significance.
The Nag Hammadi Scriptures, edited by Marvin Meyer and James M. Robinson, is the most comprehensive and up-to-date single-volume English-language edition of the celebrated Gnostic manuscripts found in Egypt in 1945. These texts are among the most significant discoveries in religious history, rivalling the importance of the Dead Sea Scrolls. The Nag Hammadi library encompasses a variety of Gnostic gospels and sacred writings, including the renowned Gospel of Thomas, Gospel of Mary, and the recently unearthed Gospel of Judas, along with other profound works that reveal insights into early Christianity, ancient Judaism, and Greco-Roman spirituality.
This volume is meticulously curated to offer readers an accessible and engaging experience. It features a wealth of supporting materials such as introductory essays, detailed notes, comprehensive tables, a glossary, and an index to help contextualise and elucidate the ancient texts. These introductory essays provide scholarly insights into the historical and cultural backdrop of the Gnostic manuscripts, enhancing the reader's understanding of their contemporary significance.
The discovery at Nag Hammadi has transformed modern perspectives on early religious traditions and beliefs. The texts challenge conventional narratives about the early Christian Church and reveal the diverse spiritual landscape of the ancient world. They shed light on theological concepts and spiritual practices that were once considered heretical but are now recognised as integral to the broader fabric of religious history.
