The Erotic Poems by Ovid explores the multifaceted nature of sexual desire through a collection of poems that range from passionate declarations of eternal love to light-hearted justifications for promiscuity.
In the Amores, Ovid expresses his feelings through a series of elegies dedicated to Corinna, his captivating and elusive mistress. These early poems reveal an intimate and vulnerable side of the poet.
The vulnerable tone shifts dramatically in the infamous Art of Love, where Ovid offers a witty and insightful guide to seduction. This work, perceived as obscene, was one of the reasons attributed to Ovid's banishment from Rome in AD 8.

About the Author
Publius Ovidius Naso was born in 43 BC at Sumo in Central Italy. He was expelled from Rome by the emperor Augustus in AD 8 for some unknown offence. He published poetry throughout his life. Peter Green is the Dougherty Centennial Professor of Classics in the University of Texas, Austin. He has translated Ovid and Juvenal for the Penguin Classics.
