Iain Campbell first visited Antarctica in 1964/65 as a soil scientist with New Zealand's DSIR. Over 35 years and 17 expeditions, he explored the Transantarctic Mountains and Dry Valleys, researching soils, permafrost and human impacts. Awarded the Polar Medal in 1991, he has authored more than 90 Antarctic publications.
- An authoritative description of the many unique features of the Antarctic Dry Valleys, beautifully illustrated with more than 220 pictures.
- More than just another book of Antarctic Dry Valley pictures, as it outlines how natureβs processes in this cold desert environment have shaped the land surfaces over many millions of years to produce its unique features.
- A book to tempt into adventure a young and enquiring mind.
- An expert illustrated account of the of the interplay of the natural forces shaping Antarctic Dry Valley landscapes and its unique features, from their timeless beginning to present day human impacts.
After many visits to Antarctica and the Dry Valleys over a 35-year period, soil scientist Dr. Iain Campbell takes the reader on a journey into the coldest and driest part of this planet with Secrets From The Antarctic Dry Valleys. The unique features of the Dry Valleys lie in the long and complicated glacial history, and the extraordinary age and undisturbed nature of the land surfaces, which, with the severe cold and aridity, slow down all natural processes.
Illustrated with more than 220 pictures, the book outlines some of the processes that operate in this timeless landscape and produce the many strange features seen in the Dry Valleys. These include land surfaces and rocks shaped by wind, Mars-like landscapes, and, of recent date, some impacts from human activity.

About the Author
Iain Campbell first visited Antarctica in the 1964/65 summer with colleague Graeme Claridge, as soil scientists with the New Zealand Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, to investigate the nature of soils in Antarctica. They discovered very old red soils at high elevations and also soils that had very high levels of nitrate salts. This and subsequent exploratory investigations to expand knowledge about the nature and significance of Antarctic soils spanned the length of the Transantarctic Mountains and over 35 years, Iain made 17 Antarctic expeditions with an increasing focus on the Dry Valleys. Between 1990 and 1999 Iain worked in the Dry Valleys as a private scientist largely undertaking permafrost and human environmental impacts research. Iain was awarded the Polar Medal in 1991 and is the author of over 90 Antarctic publications.
