The Book That Broke the World
The second volume in the bestselling, ground-breaking Library Trilogy, following THE BOOK THAT WOULDN'T BURN. We fight for the people we love. We fight for the ideas we want to be true.
The Book That Broke the World by Mark Lawrence is the exhilarating second volume in the bestselling, ground-breaking Library Trilogy, following The Book That Wouldn't Burn. This epic sequel continues to weave a tale of adventure, discovery, and romance, set against the backdrop of a fantastical world where the love for books and the libraries that house them is a central theme.
In The Book That Broke the World, we are reunited with Evar and Livira, two protagonists whose lives are intertwined yet separated by vast distances and even different realities. Forced to flee the library, Evar finds himself driven before an implacable foe, embarking on a journey that takes him into the vastness of an unexplored world. In stark contrast, Livira is trapped in a ghost world and must recover her book to return to her life. Her journey takes her deep inside her own writing, where she must wrestle with her stories to reclaim the volume in which they were written.
As Evar traverses the outer expanses, exploring a world he's never seen, Livira's quest lies in the recesses of her own imaginings. The narrative beautifully juxtaposes their separate yet connected paths, highlighting their struggles and growth. All the while, the library quietly works in the background, weaving thread to thread, bringing together scattered elements of Livira's past—friends and foes alike—beneath new skies.
Long ago, a lie was told. Over the years, this lie has grown and spread, setting off a chain of desperate consequences. Now, as one edifice topples into the next with ever-growing violence, this lie threatens to break the world. The secret war that defines the library has chosen its champions, setting them on the board. It is now time for them to fight for what they believe in, or risk losing everything.
The Library Trilogy is a celebration of books and the places that house them. While the narrative focuses on one vast and timeless library, the love for literature and its sanctuaries extends to smaller, more personal collections and bookshops of all shades. This saga, rich with intricate world-building and profound character development, is a love letter to readers and dreamers everywhere, those who find solace, adventure, and endless possibilities within the pages of a book.

About the Author
Mark Lawrence was born in Champagne-Urbanan, Illinois, to British parents but moved to the UK at the age of one. He went back to the US after taking a PhD in mathematics at Imperial College to work on a variety of research projects including the 'Star Wars' missile defence programme. Returning to the UK, he has worked mainly on image processing and decision/reasoning theory. He says he never had any ambition to be a writer so was very surprised when a half-hearted attempt to find an agent turned into a global publishing deal overnight. His first trilogy, The Broken Empire, has been universally acclaimed as a ground-breaking work of fantasy, and both Emperor of Thorns and The Liar's Key have won the Gemmell Legend award for best fantasy novel. Mark is married, with four children, and lives in Bristol.
