In Bomber Boys, Patrick Bishop tells the compelling story of the 125,000 men from around the globe who served in Bomber Command during the Second World Warβa form of warfare that had never before been implemented and would never be seen again. These men, often barely out of adolescence, operated from stark bases and undertook perilous night-time missions over enemy territory. Between 1940 and 1945, they flew continuously, halting only when adverse weather conditions made operations impossible. During a significant portion of the war, these brave pilots were the only combatants capable of striking Germany within its borders.
The book offers an intense, unromanticised portrayal of their struggle. Living under harsh conditions, the pilots embarked on missions that frequently ended in death. The odds were heavily stacked against them, and their survival rate was dismally low. Out of the men who served in Bomber Command, 55,000 were killedβrepresenting nearly one in ten of all the British and Commonwealth war dead during the conflict.
