From Henning Mankell, the bestselling author of the Wallander series, comes Depths, a tense and gripping psychological thriller that delves into the obsessive mind of a naval engineer and his infatuation with a mysterious woman. Set against the backdrop of the dark and tumultuous early days of World War I, this novel intertwines the themes of isolation, obsession, and the haunting grip of the past.

In October 1914, the Swedish destroyer Svea emerges from the Stockholm archipelago, bearing south-south-east. On board is Lars Tobiasson-Svartman, a methodical and meticulous naval engineer charged with taking precise depth soundings for the Swedish navy. His life is governed by a rigid obsession with measurement and precision, which is mirrored in his emotionally detached relationship with his wife.

During a routine mission close to where soundings are being taken, Lars rows out to a desolate and barren reef, believed to be uninhabited. To his astonishment, he discovers a young woman named Sara living in crude conditions on the island. Despite her wild and almost feral appearance, Sara awakens something deep within Lars—an inexplicable and fervent obsession. This encounter thrusts Lars into a spiral of fixation that contrasts starkly with his former life of exactitude.

Though the mission is deemed a success and the Svea returns to Gothenburg, Lars remains haunted by his short but profound interaction with Sara. Compelled by an urge he cannot fully comprehend, he finds himself drawn back to the isolated reef, and to Sara, whose very presence begins to unravel the structured fabric of his existence. As the story unfolds, Lars’s obsession leads him down a dark path, blurring the lines between reality and the delusions of his troubled mind.

Depths is a masterfully crafted narrative of psychological tension, exploring the depths of human isolation and the powerful forces of desire and madness. Mankell's distinctive prose and intricate character development offer readers an unsettling yet enthralling experience, prompting them to question the tenuous boundaries that hold one's sanity in place.
