African-Australian Marriage Migration

An Ethnography of (Un)happiness
Book Hero Magic crafted this summary to help describe this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Summary
African-Australian Marriage Migration: An Ethnography of (Un)happiness by Henrike A. Hoogenraad explores the complex journeys of African-Australian couples navigating marriage migration. It reveals how happiness is pursued as an ideal from the outset of the visa process, yet often remains elusive due to bureaucratic hurdles, racism, and unrealistic romantic expectations. This ethnography challenges negative stereotypes about migrant relationships and offers an insightful look into the intimate and institutional challenges faced in cross-border unions.

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

In African-Australian Marriage Migration: An Ethnography of (Un)happiness, Henrike A. Hoogenraad follows journeys of marriage migration among African-Australian couples. The study narrates these journeys as 'happiness projects' since for cross-border couples, happiness is connected to dreams for a life-long partnership that begins with the visa application. Yet, happiness is invoked as an aspired state rather than an achieved goal. The obstacles of government bureaucracy, institutional and everyday racism, and unrealistic expectations of romance prevent the hoped-for happy endings.

This monograph challenges a 'scam artist' narrative that generalises migrant men and their sponsoring partners, and which obscures the difficult process of crossing borders both physical and intimate. Hoogenraad's work is a welcome contribution to anthropological literature on marriage migration.
