Too Soon Old, Too Late Smart by Dr Gordon Livingston is a profoundly insightful exploration of life’s timeless lessons from a seasoned psychiatrist who has spent over thirty years listening to people’s most intimate secrets and struggles. This eloquent book dives deeply into the common threads that bind us all as human beings, examining the universal challenges we all face while striving to make the most of our finite existence.

Dr Gordon Livingston's journey is as compelling as the wisdom he imparts. After serving as a surgeon for the 11th Armoured Cavalry Regiment in Vietnam during the tumultuous years of 1968-69, he returned to the United States and began his work as a psychiatrist. In his practice, he has witnessed a wide array of human experiences, noting what contributes to a fulfilling life and what detracts from it, often through people’s own making. His tragedy is deeply personal; Livingston has been twice bereaved, having lost his eldest son to suicide and his youngest to leukaemia within a thirteen-month span.

Drawing from a lifetime filled with service, personal loss, and professional insight, Too Soon Old, Too Late Smart distils thirty fundamental truths about life. Among these pearls of wisdom are key reflections such as "We are what we do," "Any relationship is under the control of the person who cares the least," and "The perfect is the enemy of the good." Livingston also poignantly reminds us that "Only bad things happen quickly," and advices that "Forgiveness is a form of letting go, but they are not the same thing." He acknowledges that "The statute of limitations has expired on most of our childhood traumas," offering a pathway towards healing and understanding.

This deeply perceptive book not only provides profound observations but also encourages readers to reflect on their own lives. It is an invaluable guide to finding meaning, making peace with our past, and understanding the intricacies of human relationships. Whether grappling with loss, seeking personal growth, or simply yearning for a more enriched life, Too Soon Old, Too Late Smart is a compelling and necessary read.
