A new edition of a forgotten classic by H.G. Wells, introduced by acclaimed biographer of Wells, Michael Sherborne. Mr Blettsworthy is shipwrecked on an island home to cannibals. When he does escape, he returns home only to find the Great War has broken out. It seems he just cannot escape the savagery of the world.

Mr Blettsworthy on Rampole Island tells the story of a gentleman of culture and refinement who suffered shipwreck and saw no human beings other than cruel and savage cannibals for several years. It details how he beheld megatheria alive and made some notes of their habits. How he became a sacred lunatic is also an intriguing part of his journey.

Eventually, he did escape in a strange manner from the horror and barbarities of Rampole Island, just in time to fight in the Great War. The narrative continues with how he almost returned to the island forever. The book includes much amusing and edifying matter concerning manners, customs, beliefs, warfare, crime, and a storm at sea.

Concluding with some reflections upon life in general and upon these present times in particular, Mr Blettsworthy on Rampole Island offers a captivating blend of adventure and introspection.
