The Long Shadow of Antiquity offers a vivid exploration of how the classical world of ancient Greece and Rome continues to shape our lives today. Authors Gregory and Alicia Aldrete challenge the notion that 'ancient history' is irrelevant, demonstrating the enduring influence of classical civilisation on politics, law, literature, timekeeping, and everyday rituals such as dining, dressing, and exercising. The book also highlights parallels between current societal behavioursβ€”such as political upheaval and celebrity cultureβ€”and their ancient counterparts, culminating in a compelling new final chapter.

The Long Shadow of Antiquity is a vivid exploration of the many ways the classical world remains relevant today. This book offers a passionate justification for why we continue to read about and study the lives and works of the ancient Greeks and Romans.

Challenging the way the phrase 'That's just ancient history' is used to dismiss something as irrelevant, Gregory S. Aldrete and Alicia Aldrete demonstrate how much ancient Greece and Rome have influenced and shaped our world today, in both large and small ways. From the more commonly known influences on politics, law, literature, and timekeeping, to the everyday rituals and routines we take for granted when we exercise, dine, marry, and dress, we are heavily rooted in the ancient world.

Even the political upheaval, celebrity obsession, and the blurring of public and private boundaries seen in current news betray ancient characteristicsβ€”now brought to the fore in a new final chapter.

If you have ever wondered how far we still walk in the footsteps of the ancients, or wanted to understand how the study of the classical world can inform and explain our lives today, The Long Shadow of Antiquity is the book for you.
