'An idiosyncratic ride through history' Independent
'Holland and Sandbrook have pretty much reinvented popular history for the modern age' The Times

Step into the fascinating world of The Rest is History, where the celebrated historians Dr Tom Holland and Dominic Sandbrook unravel some of the most peculiar and intriguing moments from the annals of time. Known for their engaging storytelling and sharp wit, Holland and Sandbrook take readers on a journey that brings the past to life in ways we've never imagined.

Ever wondered which party was the biggest fiasco in history? Or how a simple hair appointment nearly exposed Winston Churchill's cover during a critical moment in World War II? The authors tackle these questions head-on, delivering surprising truths and hidden stories with their signature blend of humour and insight.

Explore the bizarre belief of the Nazis that they were descendants of the mythical people of Atlantis, and delve into the achievements that earned Alfred the Great his epithet. These tantalising questions are just the beginning; the book brims with stories that span the extraordinary and the absurd.

The Rest is History also features astonishing anecdotes, such as a British political leader's alleged scheme to feed his lover to alligators and the laughable misidentification of a Brazilian emperor as a banana by his own subjects. Holland and Sandbrook leave no stone unturned, ensuring that no tale is too outrageous or too arcane to be brought to light.

Accompanied by amusing illustrations, engaging trivia, and a fun pub quiz to test your newly acquired knowledge, The Rest is History is an unmissable read for history enthusiasts and casual readers alike. Perfect for anyone with a curiosity about the quirky, enigmatic corners of our past, this book will keep you entertained and enlightened from cover to cover.
