Remote Sensing for Geoscientists
Book Hero Magic created this recommendation. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! IS THIS YOUR NEXT READ?
This book is an updated and expanded version of the existing text that explains what remote sensing is and how to use it in the earth sciences. It serves as a how-to guide and reference for those requiring remote sensing to assist with geologic mapping, landform analysis, petroleum and mineral exploration, groundwater development, civil engineer
This third edition of the bestselling Remote Sensing for Geologists: A Guide to Image Interpretation is now titled Remote Sensing for Geoscientists: Image Analysis and Integration. The title change reflects that this edition applies to a broad spectrum of geosciences, not just geology; stresses that remote sensing has become more than photointerpretation; and emphasises integration of multiple remote sensing technologies to solve Earth science problems. The text reviews systems and applications, explains what to look for when analysing imagery, and provides abundant case histories to illustrate the integration and application of these tools.
See whatโs new in the second edition:
- Broader coverage to include integration of multiple remote sensing technologies
- Expanded with significant new illustrations in colour and reviews of new satellites and sensors
- Analysis of imagery for geobotanical remote sensing, remote geochemistry, modern analogues to ancient environments, and astrogeology
The book covers how to initiate a project, including determining the objective, choosing the right tools, and selecting imagery. It describes techniques used in geologic mapping and mineral and hydrocarbon exploration, image analysis used in mine development and petroleum exploitation, site evaluation, groundwater development, surface water monitoring, geothermal resource exploitation, and logistics. It also demonstrates how imagery is used to establish environmental baselines; monitor land, air, and water quality; map hazards; and determine the effects of global warming.
The many examples of geologic mapping on other planets and the moon highlight how to analyse planetary surface processes, map stratigraphy, and locate resources. The book then examines remote sensing and the public, geographic information systems and Google Earth, and how imagery is used by the media, in the legal system, and for environmental analysis.
Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?
โA well organised and highly readable overview of many powerful and significant applications of practical remote sensing... An excellent job in staying relevant in an ever-changing technology landscape, destined to become a standard reference for practitioners and students.โ — Dr Ralph N. Baker
โProvides an earth scientist with a comprehensive, efficient resource covering reflected light, thermal, radar, and geophysical sensors such as potential field, EM, GPR, and side-scan sonar... An important contribution for mapping the earthโs geology.โ — James Ellis
