London's 'Golden Mile'

The Great Houses of the Strand, 1550–1650
Book Hero Magic crafted this summary to help describe this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Summary
London's 'Golden Mile' by Manolo Guerci reconstructs the remarkable 'Strand palaces,' eleven grand houses lining the Strand in London from 1550 to 1650. This stretch served as the capital's 'Golden Mile,' where England's early-modern and post-Reformation elites competed to establish their status by building and furnishing these new, secular cathedrals. The book explores how their inventive blend of vernacular and continental features shaped a distinctive English architectural style, symbolising power on the world stage. Drawing on nearly two decades of research and unpublished archival sources, it reveals a crucial, previously hidden chapter of London's and England's architectural history.

A reconstruction of the ‘Strand palaces’, where England’s early–modern and post–Reformation elites jostled to build and furnish new, secular cathedrals

This book reconstructs the so-called "Strand palaces"—eleven great houses that once stood along the Strand in London. Between 1550 and 1650, this was the capital’s "Golden Mile": home to a unique concentration of patrons and artists, and where England’s early-modern and post-Reformation elites jostled to establish themselves by building and furnishing new, secular cathedrals.

Their inventive, eclectic, and yet carefully crafted mix of vernacular and continental features not only shaped some of the greatest country houses of the day, but also the image of English power on the world stage. It also gave rise to a distinctly English style, which was to become the symbol of a unique architectural period.

The product of almost two decades of research, and benefitting from close archival investigation, London's 'Golden Mile' brings together an incredible array of unpublished sources that sheds new light on one of the most important chapters in London’s architectural history, and on English architecture more broadly.

Elizabeth Goldring in the Times Literary Supplement commends Guerci for expertly piecing together visual and documentary clues to conjure a lost urban landscape.
