A German Officer in Occupied Paris
Ernst Jünger, one of twentieth-century Germany’s most important and controversial writers, faithfully kept a journal during the Second World War in occupied Paris, on the eastern front, and in Germany until its defeat—writings that are of major historical and literary significance. These wartime journals appear here in English for the first time.
A German Officer in Occupied Paris by Ernst Jünger offers a compelling glimpse into the life of one of twentieth-century Germany's most important—and most controversial—writers. Decorated for bravery in World War I and known for his acclaimed western front memoir, Storm of Steel, Jünger was a prolific author who depicted war's horrors while simultaneously extolling its glories.
As a Wehrmacht captain during World War II, Jünger meticulously kept a journal while in occupied Paris, continuing his writings on the eastern front and in Germany until its defeat. These writings hold both historical and literary significance.
Jünger's Paris journals reflect his Francophile excitement, romantic affairs, and fascinations with botany and entomology. Alongside these interests are his mystical and religious reflections and insightful observations on the occupation and politics of collaboration. While working as a mail censor, Jünger lived a privileged life, meeting artists like Céline, Cocteau, Braque, and Picasso. His notes from the Caucasus capture the chaos post-Stalingrad and the atrocities on the eastern front.
Upon his return to Paris, Jünger noted the French resistance and was closely connected to the German military conspirators who schemed to assassinate Hitler in 1944. After fleeing France, he was reunited with his family as Germany neared capitulation. Throughout his life, Jünger acted both as a participant and commentator, often close to historical horrors yet distancing himself at times. He turned his experiences and reflections into a remarkable work of art.
These wartime journals are presented in English for the first time, offering fresh insights into the dilemmas of the twentieth century from the sharp mind of a paradoxical observer.
