This is a new (2024) translation in American-English of the legendary, German antiwar novel, All Quiet on the Western Front. This edition is expressly designed for American readers to be easier to read than older British-English editions. This new text uses modern military terms and clearer descriptions of European battlefields. The translator is the military expert and award-winning editor David W. Bradford.
The original author, Erich Maria Remarque, was a German soldier who was severely wounded during the First World War of 1914-1918. From his experiences came perhaps the greatest war novel ever. This new 2024 translation revitalizes and brings alive for American readers this classic novel of infantry combat and tragic loss.
Rare photographs of young Germans at war illustrate the new text. The images confirm the haunting realism of All Quiet on the Western Front.
In this new American-English translation, the German characters are portrayed with remarkable clarity and universal humanity. They could be soldiers of any nation in any war. (By contrast, the widely reprinted 1929 translation in British-English is heavily reliant on British slang and culture, e.g., German soldiers supposedly exclaiming "good Blighty," and "by Jove.")
In this new text, American readers will gain fresh insight into the haunted German youth who fought and died upon the battlefields of France over a century ago. Their generation was morally, as well as physically, scarred by the First World War. That tragedy led to the even greater catastrophe of the Second World War two decades later. This new American-English translation of All Quiet on the Western Front is not to be missed.
Boston Hill Press is a quality publisher of books in history, biography, fiction, and religion.
From the new introduction:
"All Quiet on the Western Front embeds us with a fictional, but representative company of German soldiers fighting in France. ... The global tragedy of the First World War, writ large, becomes their personal nightmare. These naive, young Germans fight and die in France, far from home, without ever really knowing why."
