Shirl's Pick

I’ve been a fan of Pax’s comedy since his days in the trio Frickin Dangerous Bro right through to his hit TV show Raised by Refugees. Each chapter had me genuinely laughing out loud as Pax reflects on embarrassing moments from throughout his life. At the same time the book offers a look at what it was like for him growing up as an immigrant in Aotearoa and navigating the challenge of fitting in with his peers and society. There are so many moments in his book that everyone will be able to relate too. If you’re after a book that will make you laugh and feel seen all at once then I highly recommend Mortified!

Description

The hilarious and heartfelt debut book from award-winning TV writer and comedian Pax Assadi

A joyfully chaotic memoir about what we gain by embracing our shameful moments, from award-winning comedian and TV writer Pax Assadi.

What do we lose by hiding our shame, and what do we gain by sharing it?

From herding ducks across South Auckland to catastrophic culture shock in Pakistan, to being catfished, conned, heartbroken and humbled. In this hilarious and painfully honest memoir, Pax retraces his story by interrogating the memories he's tried to keep in the dark.

Do children of refugees embarrass themselves because they’re trying to navigate across cultures? Do teenagers do stupid things because they are teenagers? When does painful experience become ‘good material’ – and should it?

The things that make us cringe are also the things that make us who we are.
