Raising Girls Who Like Themselves by Kasey Edwards and Dr Christopher Scanlon is an essential read for any parent looking to nurture a confident, happy and resilient daughter. This compelling book delves into the critical seven qualities that empower girls to thrive in a society that often highlights their flaws. Through a combination of relatable personal anecdotes, evidence-based research, and practical advice, the authors offer a roadmap for fostering self-esteem and emotional well-being in young girls.

Recent statistics paint a troubling picture: nearly one in five girls aged 16-17 years meet the clinical criteria for depression, and one in fourteen young Australians aged 4-17 has experienced an anxiety disorder. These numbers only worsen as females age, with one in three women in Australia experiencing anxiety. Edwards and Scanlon tackle these startling statistics head-on, offering actionable steps to counteract these trends.

When you raise a girl who likes herself, everything else falls into place. She will strive for excellence because she has faith in her ability to achieve it and the confidence to pick herself up when she falls. She will nurture her physical and mental health because it's natural to care for something you love. She will insist on healthy relationships because she believes she deserves nothing less. She will be joyful and secure, knowing that her greatest friend and most capable ally is herself.

Packed with practical, evidence-based advice, Raising Girls Who Like Themselves outlines the seven essential qualities that enable girls to thrive and shield themselves against a world that tells them they are flawed:

  • A girl who likes herself has a power perspective.
  • A girl who likes herself has body confidence.
  • A girl who likes herself owns her body.
  • A girl who likes herself is calm.
  • A girl who likes herself is independent and masterful.
  • A girl who likes herself has strong relationships.
  • A girl who likes herself is herself.

Free of parental guilt and grounded in robust research, Raising Girls Who Like Themselves is imbued with the warmth and wit of a mum and dad who are in the same parenting trenches as you, fighting for their daughters' futures. This book is not just a guide; it's a companion on the journey of parenting.
