Description
Dio Cassius (Cassius Dio), circa 150–235 CE, was born at Nicaea in Bithynia in Asia Minor. Upon the death of his father, who was the Roman governor of Cilicia, he went to Rome in 180. There, he entered the Senate and served as an advocate under the emperor Commodus. Throughout his career, he held several high offices, becoming a close friend to multiple emperors. His roles included governor of Pergamum and Smyrna, consul in 220, proconsul of Africa, and later, governor of Dalmatia and Pannonia. He served as consul again in 229.
Of the eighty books of Dio's great work, Roman History, which covers the era from the legendary landing of Aeneas in Italy to the reign of Alexander Severus (222–235 CE), we possess Books 36–60. Notably, Books 36 and 55–60 have gaps, which cover the years 68 BCE–47 CE. The missing portions are partially supplied by Zonaras, who relies closely on Dio for the earlier gaps, and by John Xiphilinus (from the eleventh century) for some later gaps from Book 35 onwards. There are also numerous excerpts available. The facilities for research afforded by Dio's official duties and his diligence make him a crucial source for understanding Roman history during the last years of the republic and the first four emperors.
