Kickturn

Kickturn by Brie Spangler follows Lindy, a young girl accustomed to life on the road in her parents' refurbished school bus. When the bus breaks down in San Jose, Lindy encounters the opportunity to potentially meet her skateboarding idol and perhaps find a place to settle down. This illustrated coming-of-age novel delves into the significance of trying new things and the community you discover along the way.

Lindy doesn't particularly enjoy the nomadic lifestyle with her influencer parents in their renovated RV-school bus, but she has grown used to it. They travel from one national park to another, while her mom creates #yogalife content. Instead of homeschooling as intended, Lindy spends her time watching her favourite skateboarder on YouTube, from day to night.

When their bus breaks down in San Jose, Lindy meets a group of local girls who introduce her to a real, live skate park. At that moment, Lindy immediately falls in love—with skateboarding, with having friends beyond her cat, and with the idea of staying in one place for an extended period.

Lindy's parents are eager to hit the road again as soon as the bus is repaired, but Lindy is determined to persuade them to stay, even if it means resorting to sabotage. The question arises: will they ever be able to establish roots? And if they do, will Lindy's parents ever forgive her actions?
