Damaged Goods by Oliver Shah is a gripping and meticulously researched account of the dramatic rise and fall of Sir Philip Green, the once-celebrated magnate of the British high street. This extraordinary tale delves into the life and career of a man who, at the peak of his power, was a titan of the retail world—with the clout to command the attention of prime ministers and supermodels alike.

Green's empire began to crumble with the catastrophic collapse of British Home Stores (BHS), a beloved institution that left 11,000 employees without jobs and jeopardised the pensions of 20,000 individuals. The scandal reached its zenith when it was revealed that Green's mismanagement had created a colossal £571 million pension deficit. Though he eventually contributed £363 million towards addressing this shortfall, the damage to his reputation was irreparable.

The narrative takes a darker turn as Green's troubles escalate. In October 2018, he was at the centre of Britain's #MeToo scandal, accused of sexual and racial harassment by multiple individuals. These revelations not only conveyed a troubling portrait of the man behind the retail success but also highlighted systemic issues within his businesses. Simultaneously, Topshop, another cornerstone of Green’s empire, faced its own financial woes, with its pension deficits swelling perilously close to the figures that had precipitated BHS’s downfall.

In this engrossing exposé, award-winning journalist Oliver Shah, who first broke the BHS story, goes beyond the headlines to unveil the hidden intricacies of Green's business strategies and personal conduct. Shah's rigorous investigation reveals how Green, once dubbed the 'king of the high street', became embroiled in scandals that ultimately dismantled his empire and tarnished his legacy.

Damaged Goods provides readers with a rare glimpse into the volatile world of high-stakes retail and the enigmatic figure at its heart. Through extensive interviews, insider accounts, and thorough journalistic scrutiny, Shah narrates the rise, peak, and fall of Sir Philip Green—a cautionary tale of ambition, hubris, and the relentless pursuit of wealth at any cost.

This compelling book is an essential read for those interested in the complexities of business ethics, corporate governance, and the human stories behind public figures. Whether you are a student of business, a follower of high-street fashion, or simply a lover of riveting real-life drama, Damaged Goods delivers an unforgettable account of power, downfall, and redemption.
