Notes From A Small Island
In 1995, before leaving his much-loved home in North Yorkshire to move back to the States for a few years with his family, Bill Bryson insisted on taking one last trip around Britain, a sort of valedictory tour of the green and kindly island that had so long been his home.
Bill Bryson's hilarious tour of his adopted country- the book that was voted the nation's favourite book on modern Britain in a World Book Day BBC poll.

DescriptionNotes From A Small Island by Bill Bryson is a delightfully entertaining exploration of one man's deep affection for Britain. The book opens with Bryson's decision to leave his beloved home in North Yorkshire for a few years to return to the United States with his family. Before departing, however, he embarks on a farewell tour of Britain, determined to document what makes the country so uniquely charming.
Through a blend of witty observations and insightful commentary, Bryson takes readers on a journey across the lush landscapes, quaint villages, and bustling cities of the green island. He weaves together anecdotes about eccentric locals, peculiar traditions, and the country's quirks, from its proclivity for Marmite to its quaint place names like Farleigh Wallop, Titsey, and Shellow Bowells. Bryson also reflects on the idiosyncrasies of British life, such as the national obsession with tea and biscuits, the endearing habit of saying 'Mustn't grumble,' and the romantic yet somewhat baffling love for Gardeners' Question Time.
Originally published in 1995, Notes From A Small Island became an instant number-one bestseller and has since sold over two million copies. The book was even voted the nation's favourite book on modern Britain in a World Book Day BBC poll, cementing its status as a cherished literary journey through the intricacies of British culture. Bryson's gift for blending humour with his genuine love for Britain makes for a captivating read that resonates with both locals and travellers alike.
With his keen eye for detail and his penchant for the absurd, Bryson's farewell tour is not just a simple travelogue but a heartfelt tribute to the country he calls home. Readers will find themselves laughing out loud at his hilarious anecdotes, marvelling at his astute observations, and perhaps seeing Britain from a fresh perspective.
