DescriptionPax by Tom Holland takes readers on an enthralling journey through one of the most remarkable periods in ancient history, the Pax Romana. This definitive history of Rome's golden age captures the height of the Roman Empire's power and influence, showcasing its unmatched wealth, military might, and cultural achievements.
The narrative begins in 69 AD, a tumultuous year marked by the rapid succession of four emperors. It spans the next seven decades, culminating in the death of Hadrian. Holland masterfully portrays the grandeur and complexity of the Roman Empire during this time, from the opulence of its capital to the remote edges of its vast territories.
Tom Holland vividly illustrates the empire's monumental events and key figures, weaving a tapestry of life in ancient Rome. From the devastation of Jerusalem and the catastrophic eruption of Pompeii to the construction of iconic landmarks such as the Colosseum and Hadrian's Wall, each scene is brought to life with rich detail and vibrant storytelling. The narrative also highlights the expansive conquests of Emperor Trajan, further cementing Rome's dominance.
Further, Holland delves into the lives of various Romans, from humble slaves to influential emperors, providing a comprehensive picture of society during the Pax Romana. He explores how Rome's period of relative peace and stability was paradoxically founded on relentless military aggression and conquest, challenging popular perceptions of this so-called golden age.
This stunning portrait of Rome at its zenith is a must-read for enthusiasts of grand historical narratives. Holland, co-host of the popular podcast "The Rest Is History," excels in bringing the drama and splendour of Rome's past to vivid life.
