Sanford Meisner on Acting
Taking readers step-by-step through the most basic acting exercises to critiques of performances in scenes from contemporary American plays, this volume follows a class of eight at the Neighborhood Playhouse, where Meisner has taught for fifty years.
Sanford Meisner on Acting by Sanford Meisner, in collaboration with Dennis Longwell, explores the teachings of one of the most renowned and cherished acting instructors in the country. This book chronicles a fifteen-month experience in one of his acting classes, starting with basic exercises and culminating in powerful and refined scenes from contemporary American plays.
This work is indispensable for both aspiring and seasoned actors. Meisner's presence throughout the book is a joy; he continuously empathises with his students, encouraging them, and evoking emotion, laughter, and an increasing technical prowess in them.
The book features an introduction by Sydney Pollack, the esteemed director of Out of Africa and Tootsie, who studied under Meisner for five years. Arthur Miller praises the book: "This book should be read by anyone who wants to act or even appreciate what acting involves. Like Meisner's way of teaching, it is the straight goods."
