Book Hero Magic crafted this summary to help describe this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Summary
The Not Terribly Good Book of Heroic Failures celebrates the wonderfully unique ways people spectacularly mess up. From fifty Mexican convicts escaping their jail only to end up in the courtroom of their own judge, to a tourist convinced New York was Rome for two days, the book highlights human folly with charm and wit. It also features a man who authored an English-Portuguese phrasebook without knowledge of either language and a kamikaze pilot who survived eleven missions to pen a sceptical autobiography about planes. This humorous collection glorifies the endless possibilities of failure and the joy of getting it wrong.

Book Hero Magic created this recommendation. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! IS THIS YOUR NEXT READ?

Ideal for readers who enjoy humour and stories of eccentric mishaps. This book suits those who appreciate lighthearted, entertaining anecdotes about human blunders rather than serious biographies or self-help. Fans of witty, offbeat humour celebrating imperfection will find it especially appealing.

All successful people are the same (you know, drive, will to win, determination) — it's just too dull to contemplate. But everyone who messes up big time does so in a way that is completely individual.

Step forward the fifty Mexican convicts who dug an escape tunnel out of their jail and came up in the courtroom before the judge who sentenced them.

Please welcome the world's worst tourist who spent two days in New York believing he was in Rome.

Be thrilled by the man who wrote an English-Portuguese phrasebook without either knowing English or owning an English-Portuguese dictionary.

And marvel at the least successful kamikaze pilot who returned from eleven suicide missions, lived to the age of 93 and went on to write an autobiography in which he claimed planes were unsafe.

The Not Terribly Good Book of Heroic Failures shows that there really is no limit to what humanity can achieve, celebrating the vast, life-enhancing possibilities of getting it wrong.

About the Author

Stephen Pile was a journalist for far too long and is the author of The Book of Heroic Failures. He is also the Founder and President of the Not Terribly Good Club of Great Britain and was the Artistic Director of the First International Nether Wallop Arts festival in 1984, which came about by accident. The next week Stephen met his wife, had three children, became a television critic for fourteen years and hasn't been out of the house since, which is why Britain looks so strange and changed.
