Diodorus Library of History, written in the first century BCE, is the most extensively preserved history by an ancient Greek author. The work is in three parts: mythical history to the Trojan War; history to Alexander s death (323 BCE); history to 54 BCE. Books 1 5 and 11 20 survive complete, the rest in fragments.
Diodorus Siculus, a Greek historian from Agyrium in Sicily, lived around 80–20 BCE. He authored forty books of world history, referred to as Library of History, which is divided into three parts: mythical history of non-Greek and Greek peoples up to the Trojan War; history up to Alexander's death in 323 BCE; and history up to 54 BCE.
Out of this monumental work, we have complete Books I–V, which cover Egyptians, Assyrians, Ethiopians, and Greeks, and Books XI–XX, focusing on Greek history from 480–302 BCE. The rest of the work survives only in fragments. Though Diodorus was an uncritical compiler, he utilised excellent sources and reproduced them accurately. His work is significant for its detailed account of events not recorded elsewhere and serves as evidence for works now lost. Among the sources he used were the writings of Ephorus, Apollodorus, Agatharchides, Philistus, and Timaeus.
The Loeb Classical Library edition of Diodorus Siculus is presented in twelve volumes.
