Ethnic Studies at the Crossroads
Reckoning with the current state of ethnic studies.
Ethnic Studies at the Crossroads by George Lipsitz explores a field that is more visible than ever. Originally a project at the margins of academic and public life, ethnic studies has now achieved significant prominence and impact. However, it faces threats from well-funded political and legal campaigns against critical affirmative action, critical race theory, and diversity, equity, and inclusion policies. In this "moment of danger," Lipsitz examines the current state of the field.
Outlining the painful contradictions faced within, Lipsitz highlights how ethnic studies produces opposition, experiences incorporation, and equips individuals to challenge, survive, and overcome oppression. He also explores its potential to connect those within academia with broader community circles, leading to unexpected alliances and affinities. Critical yet optimistic, this book upholds the promising wider role of ethnic studies in social transformation.
