‘This vivid story is so rich and complex...reading about Lakshmi's journey from escaping an abusive marriage to becoming one of the most sought-after henna artists in Jaipur captivated me from the first chapter to the final page.’ Reese Witherspoon

In the vibrant and bustling city of Jaipur during the 1950s, seventeen-year-old Lakshmi escapes from an oppressive and abusive marriage. Determined to start afresh, she embarks on a journey to become the city's most in-demand henna artist. Lakshmi finds herself catering to the wealthy women of the upper class, revered not only for her intricate and original designs but also for her sage advice and discretion.

Bearing the weight of the secrets confided in her by the elite, Lakshmi must carefully navigate the dangers posed by jealous gossips and maintain her hard-earned reputation. Her dream of an independent and successful life appears within reach until her past resurfaces in the form of her estranged husband and a spirited young girl, who claims to be her long-lost sister. This unexpected reunion forces Lakshmi to reassess her meticulously constructed life and threatens to overturn her cautious efforts toward freedom and stability.

Despite the looming challenges, Lakshmi's resilience becomes her greatest asset as she continues to apply her talents, offering support and upliftment to those around her. In a society straddling the traditional and the modern, she finds herself caught between old customs and new possibilities, navigating a world that is both lush and fascinating, yet stark and cruel.

Vivid and compelling in its portrayal of one woman’s pursuit of fulfilment and autonomy, The Henna Artist by Alka Joshi opens a vivid window into mid-20th century India. It is a story of perseverance, resilience, and the intricate dance of cultural expectations and personal aspirations.
