THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER
BOOK OF THE YEAR IN GUARDIAN, ECONOMIST & NEW STATESMAN

Why the Germans Do It Better by John Kampfner is a compelling exploration of Germany's remarkable rise from a collection of fractured city-states to a global powerhouse. This extraordinary journey began just 150 years ago and has been marked by both dramatic turmoil and unprecedented prosperity. As the world faces increasing threats to democracy and civil liberties, Germany emerges as a beacon of stability and decency, a nation that has learned from its historical tribulations to build a better future.

This book astutely blends the author's personal journey and engaging anecdotes with robust empirical evidence, creating a narrative that is as informative as it is entertaining. Kampfner delves into the historical and cultural underpinnings that have shaped modern Germany, explaining how a country once devastated by war and division has become a respected leader in democratic principles, economic innovation, and social progress.

The author poses pressing questions about the post-Brexit era, encouraging readers to consider why Germany, despite its flaws, has become an exemplar for other nations. In stark contrast, Britain appears to struggle with contemporary challenges. Through this juxtaposition, the reader gains a deeper understanding of the geopolitical dynamics at play and how different paths of development lead to varied outcomes in national success and societal well-being.

Part memoir, part history, part travelogue, Why the Germans Do It Better offers a rich, witty, and nuanced portrait of an eternally intriguing country. Kampfner's thoughtful, deeply reported, and balanced analysis stands out as both provocative and illuminating, prompting readers to appreciate Germany's unique journey and its broader implications for the world.
