This Time No Mistakes by Will Hutton is a compelling and insightful book that delves into the profound and urgent economic and political challenges facing Britain today. Through rigorous analysis and eloquent prose, Hutton outlines how both right-wing and left-wing politics have faltered over the past century and charts a visionary course for remaking Britain's future. Set against the backdrop of Britain’s economic history, the book explores the deep-seated issues of national investment failures and misguided attempts to create a utopian free-market state with minimal government intervention. These policies, Hutton argues, have led to stark economic inequalities and a fractured nation. Keir Starmer praises the book as "a brilliant read... an intellectual, historical, political read with some strong themes... read it if you haven’t already." Meanwhile, the New Statesman highlights that the book "represents the beginning of a new, urgent debate" about the necessity of activist government and innovative economic strategies amid changing global circumstances. A book that could be a blueprint for a better future - if the Labour Party takes it seriously. Hutton's impassioned critique reveals how Britain needs a new economic and political philosophy, particularly to counteract rising nihilist populism. He posits that two great traditions—ethical socialism and progressive liberalism—can be united to form the foundation of a "We Society," where collective welfare and individual rights are balanced. The analysis traces back to the early 20th century, recognising the great reforming Liberal government of 1906-14, which was supported by Labour MPs. This alliance was a landmark moment in British history, demonstrating the potential of unified progressive forces. Unfortunately, the First World War disrupted this promising collaboration. Drawing on historical successes, such as the achievements of the Labour government in 1945, informed by great Liberal intellectuals like Keynes and Beveridge, Hutton argues that these periods exemplified what could be accomplished when ethical socialism and progressive liberalism work together. Hutton contends that the current electoral system has allowed Conservatives to dominate and enact damaging policies, while the Labour Party remains split between socialist idealism and cautious pragmatism. He insists that the Labour Party must rediscover the effective governance strategies of the past to create meaningful change. The book champions the need to reconfigure capitalism to serve the common good and stresses the urgency of democratic reforms to facilitate such transformations. Hutton's suggestions are anchored in widely-shared values, offering practical and inspiring solutions that are indeed achievable. This Time No Mistakes is a must-read for anyone interested in the intersection of economics, politics, and society, providing a thought-provoking blueprint for a just and equitable Britain.
