Dirty Poem, written in 1975 during Ferreira Gullar's political exile in Buenos Aires, is an epic poem that traces the poet's political and artistic evolution against the backdrop of Brazilian society. Drawing on memories of adolescence in Sao Luis do Maranhao during World War II, it confronts the socio-economic inequalities of poverty, sexism, greed, and fear with unflinching honesty. Considered the most important long poem in contemporary Brazilian literature, it captures the spirit and struggles of the Brazilian citizen.

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

Written in 1975 in Buenos Aires when Ferreira Gullar was in political exile from the Brazilian dictatorship, Dirty Poem is an epic poem that, amid life events, traces the author's political and artistic evolution. It is, by most accounts, the most important long poem of contemporary Brazilian literature.

Scholar and critic Otto Maria Carpeaux wrote: "Dirty Poem deserves to be called 'National Poem' because it embodies all of the experiences, victories, defeats, and hopes in the life of the Brazilian citizen."

It is a hypnotic work that draws on the poet's memory of adolescence in the seaside city of Sรฃo Luรญs do Maranhรฃo during World War II and deals openly with the "dirty" shamefulness of a socio-economic system that abuses its citizens with poverty, sexism, greed, and fear.

Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?

Praised by Clarice Lispector as "scandalously beautiful" and evoking the awe of a child before a tropical forest, Dirty Poem is renowned for its hypnotic language and emotional depth. The fine translation by Leland Guyer is noted for faithfully rendering Gullar's rich linguistic textures, from local idioms to expressions of exile and displacement.
