Ethical Violence

Book Hero Magic crafted this summary to help describe this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Summary
Ethical Violence by Carlo Bordoni explores the paradox of violence within human society, challenging the longstanding ethical rejection of violence by considering situations where violence is deemed morally justified, such as in self-defence by states. Bordoni examines how modern society’s growing emotionality and scepticism towards scientific thought have led to an erosion of rationality and an increase in violence, especially in the post-pandemic era. The book calls for a rediscovery of Enlightenment rationality and a balanced appreciation of technology’s positive potential to steer society away from irrationality and aggression.

Human civilization is founded on ethical principles, norms of behaviour that have accumulated over time. Perhaps the oldest of ethical principles is the rejection of violence, which includes the respect for life and for the physical and psychological integrity of others. However, in some circumstances, violence itself can be regarded as ethical – for example, when it is used by states claiming to act in self-defence. In these circumstances, the need to defend oneself against an enemy can transform war from an unacceptable act into a necessary, socially shared and morally sanctioned choice. And it is when violence becomes ethical that we must begin to fear for our future.

In the wake of the pandemic, we are witnessing the growing prevalence of aggression and emotionality in social and political life. We find ourselves living in an increasingly impatient and insecure society, which is sceptical of scientific thought and which takes refuge in the irrational. The decline of rationality and the growing prevalence of violence are increasingly common features of a society that has lost touch with the great Enlightenment narrative. We need, argues Bordoni, to rediscover the rationality we have lost and recuperate the positive side of technology.

Ethical Violence by Carlo Bordoni explores these themes, urging us to reconsider our ethical stances in a world where violence is ever more prevalent and sometimes tragically deemed as necessary.

Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?

Esteemed scholar Mari Fitzduff praises the book as a remarkable and challenging analysis of society's drift from scientific understanding towards emotional, technology-driven opinions that threaten democratic and social order. Fitzduff highlights Bordoni's warning about the difficulty of restoring rational collective consensus amidst widespread irrational beliefs.
