Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

Plumb by Maurice Gee is an enduring classic that holds a venerable place in New Zealand's literary heritage. Celebrated for its incisive exploration of moral and familial dynamics, the novel tells the story of George Plumb, an uncompromising and irascible clergyman whose fervent dedication to his principles upends the lives of those around him.

George Plumb is a character of striking complexity: part saint, part monster, his spiritual fortitude is as immense as his capacity for self-absorption. Driven by an unwavering conscience, Plumb's relentless pursuit of ideological purity exacts a significant personal toll, challenging the bonds within his family and his community. The narrative, while centred on Plumb's internal and external battles, also deftly captures the sociopolitical landscape of early 20th-century New Zealand, providing a richly textured backdrop to his life’s turmoil.

This edition of Plumb is released in the Popular Penguin format to commemorate 50 years of publishing in New Zealand, echoing Allen Lane's original vision for Penguin Books established in 1935. Lane believed in offering intelligent, accessible literature to a wide audience at affordable prices, a legacy that continues with this timeless masterpiece.

Regarded as one of the finest novels in New Zealand literature, Plumb invites readers to contemplate the cost of absolutism and the intricate interplay between personal conviction and familial loyalty. Maurice Gee's compelling prose and keen insight into human nature make this a must-read, offering an unforgettable journey into the heart of moral and moral complexity.
