The Secret Legacy of Jesus

The Judaic Teachings That Passed from James the Just to the Founding Fathers
Book Hero Magic crafted this summary to help describe this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Summary
Jeffrey J. Butz explores the hidden history of early Christianity, focusing on the original Jewish-Christian teachings of Jesus as preserved by his family and early disciples. These teachings, embodied in groups like the Nazarenes and Ebionites, were overshadowed by the rise of Paul's vision for the Church and branded heretical. Butz traces this clandestine movement's survival through time, linking it theologically to Islam, the Cathars, the Knights Templar, and Freemasonry. He further reveals how these underground Christian traditions influenced the Founding Fathers of the United States, who embedded these principles into Masonic ideals to create what they envisioned as a "New Jerusalem." This work argues for recovering this spiritual legacy to foster reconciliation among Christians, Jews, and Muslims.

With the success of Paul's desire to impose his vision for the Church, the true teachings of Jesus—as preserved by his family and disciples—were forced into hiding. This clandestine movement was seen in such early groups as the Nazarenes, Ebionites, and Elkesaites, but is generally thought to have died out when the Church of Paul branded these groups as heretics. However, despite the ongoing persecution by the Roman Catholic orthodoxy, this underground Jewish strain of Christianity was able to survive and resist incorporation into its more powerful rival.

Jeffrey Butz, author of The Brother of Jesus and the Lost Teachings of Christianity, reveals for the first time the hidden theological link that connects James the Brother of Jesus and the Ebionites with the religion of Islam, the Cathars, the Knights Templar, and Freemasonry. In The Secret Legacy of Jesus, Butz demonstrates how this centuries-old underground stream of Christ's original teachings remained alive and how it surfaced again in Colonial America, where the Founding Fathers used Masonic principles rooted in Jewish Christian teachings to establish what they believed would be a "New Jerusalem."

Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?

Publishers Weekly praises Butz as "eminently readable and accessible to nonscholars" while conducting thorough research and challenging conventional views of orthodoxy and heresy. Barrie Wilson, professor of Religious Studies, calls The Secret Legacy of Jesus "masterful" and the definitive work on Jewish Christianity, noting its challenge to the dominance of Paul's Gentile movement. Margaret Starbird highlights the book's importance in tracing an "underground stream" of Jewish-Christian beliefs culminating in Masonic traditions tied to the US Constitution's authors.
