Utopia for Realists
In Utopia for Realists, acclaimed Dutch historian Rutger Bregman takes readers on an eye-opening journey through history and modern society, revealing how visionary ideas can become practical solutions for our most pressing challenges. With engaging storytelling and robust research, Bregman argues that many of the milestones of civilisation – from the abolition of slavery to the implementation of democracy – were once dismissed as utopian fantasies. By presenting new utopian ideas like universal basic income and a 15-hour work week, he demonstrates how these concepts can be transformed into reality in our own lifetimes.
As we navigate a world of unprecedented upheaval, beset with questions about the future, society, work, happiness, family, and money, Bregman offers a refreshingly optimistic outlook. He contends that the answers we seek are not only possible but also within our grasp if we dare to think beyond traditional political divides.
This compelling guide to a revolutionary yet achievable utopia is underpinned by a wealth of studies, lively anecdotes, and numerous success stories. From the captivating account of a Canadian city that successfully eliminated poverty to the intriguing revelation of Richard Nixon's near-implementation of a basic income scheme for millions of Americans, Bregman provides concrete examples that illustrate the feasibility of his proposals.
By challenging conventional wisdom and embracing bold ideas, Utopia for Realists invites us to reimagine the future of our society. It is a call to action for anyone ready to explore innovative solutions and create a better world for all.
