Book Hero Magic crafted this summary to help describe this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Summary
Share the Wealth by Philippe Askenazy explores the root causes of economic inequality and the undervaluation of work in today's world. The book argues that the current distribution of wealth is not natural but shaped by rising rents captured by those best positioned in economic systems. Askenazy highlights how workers often bear the burden through increased productivity and harsher conditions while their pay stagnates. The author offers a fresh perspective on the relationship between capital and labour, advocating for greater mobilisation and participation, especially among low-paid workers, as a more radical alternative to neoliberal policies.

How can we reduce inequalities? How can we make work get better recognition and better pay?

Share the Wealth by Philippe Askenazy reveals that the current share of wealth is far from natural; it results from rising rents and their capture by the actors best endowed in the economic game. In this race for rents, the world of work is the big loser: while many workers feed capital rents by increased productivity and worsened working conditions, they are stigmatised as unproductive and their earnings stagnate.

By proposing a new description of the capital-work relationship and calling for a remobilisation of the world of work, particularly poorly paid employees, Askenazy illustrates that there is a more radical alternative to neoliberalism beyond simple redistribution.

Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?

Thomas Piketty praises Share the Wealth as "extraordinarily refreshing and innovative," deserving a wide international readership. He commends Askenazy's convincing argument that wealth distribution depends largely on institutional and legal frameworks shaping power relations. The book's insights into emerging, participatory trade unionismβ€”highlighted through examples of subway drivers, nurses, and cleaning workers in major citiesβ€”are noted as particularly inspiring, presenting hope for transformative futures within globalisation.
